Accessing treatment for everyday health concerns in Ireland is becoming easier than ever, as selected CarePlus Pharmacies begin implementing the new Common Conditions Service.
The nationwide initiative allows patients to receive advice, assessment, and, where appropriate, prescription treatment directly from their local pharmacist for a range of common illnesses, without the need for a GP appointment.
What Is the Common Conditions Service?
The Common Conditions Service is designed to improve access to timely healthcare and reduce pressure on GP services by enabling trained pharmacists to manage specific, straightforward conditions.
Under the service, pharmacists can assess patients and provide treatment, including certain prescription-only medicines where clinically appropriate.
Conditions Covered
The service currently includes treatment for:
Allergic rhinitis
Cold sores
Conjunctivitis
Impetigo
Oral thrush
Shingles
Uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs)
Vulvovaginal thrush
Patients will receive a private consultation with a pharmacist, who will assess symptoms, provide professional advice, and recommend or prescribe treatment if suitable. A consultation fee may apply, and services are subject to availability.
Improving Access to Care
For many patients, accessing a GP appointment can involve delays. The Common Conditions Service provides a convenient alternative for eligible, uncomplicated cases, offering professional care in a familiar community setting.
Pharmacists are highly trained healthcare professionals, and this service further strengthens their role in frontline primary care.
