Ear wax is a common cause of hearing loss. Impacted wax can cause a person to go from normal to mild hearing loss, ear wax also causes pain and a general irritation of the inner ear.

At Carrigaline CarePlus Pharmacy, we now offer a comprehensive private Earwax Removal Service, conducted by specially trained pharmacy Ear Care practitioners, which offers a safe and effective solution using the Micro-Suction method.

What is Micro-Suction? Micro-suction is a painless procedure involving the insertion of a low-pressure suction probe into the ear. Unlike traditional methods like syringing, it does not involve water, making it a simple and clean process. We utilise the advanced Tympa system, ensuring effective removal, even for stubborn wax build-ups.

Who Can Benefit? This treatment is suitable for individuals aged 16 and over, providing a safe and efficient solution to earwax-related issues.

What to Expect at Your Appointment:

  • Your 30-minute appointment will begin with a detailed explanation of the procedure and a showcase of the equipment to be used.
  • Following your consent, a member of our pharmacy Ear Care practitioners will gently remove any ear wax using magnifiers and suction tubes.
  • The process is generally painless, but it can be noisy and, at times, a little uncomfortable. If at any point you feel discomfort or pain during the appointment, please make sure you let your trained pharmacy Ear Care practitioner know.
  • Depending on the amount of wax in your ears, you might find that things sound a little different once the wax has been removed. You might also notice a small amount of ringing or buzzing in your ears, but this should settle down after a couple of days.

In the event of Unsuccessful Wax Removal: If, for any reason, we are unable to remove all the wax during the initial appointment, our pharmacy Ear Care practitioner will guide the next steps and recommend a follow-up appointment within a week for further treatment.

Preparing for Your Appointment: To enhance the effectiveness of the procedure, we recommend softening the ear wax by applying Olive oil in each ear nightly for at least 7 days before your scheduled appointment. This minimises discomfort and reduces the risk of ear canal abrasion.

Essentially, earwax is an efficient self-cleaning service for your ears and helps to protect the sensitive ear canal from things like bacteria and debris that can cause infections.

Produced naturally by glands in the ear canal, you’ll recognise earwax as any colour from yellow, to bright orange, to dark brown. Your body will normally produce enough earwax to maintain health on its own, but sometimes this wax can become hard and impacted, which can lead to problems like hearing loss, or discomfort.

A build-up of earwax can be caused by numerous factors, including narrow or damaged ear canals, skin conditions around the ear and an increased amount of hair in the ear.

Earwax build-up can cause blocked ears, earache, fullness in the ear, hearing loss, tinnitus, or dizziness. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms above, it’s important to book an appointment so a trained Ear Care Practitioner can advise on the next steps. Get in touch at carrigalinepharmacy@careplus.ie or 021-4757083

There isn’t a set recommended frequency for earwax removal, as it depends on each individual case. Some people don’t require earwax removal very often, whereas others produce vast amounts of earwax at a faster rate. If you’re concerned about the amount of earwax you are producing or would like to find out more about how often you should clean out your ears, get in touch at carrigalinepharmacy@careplus.ie or 021-4757083

There is no evidence to suggest that ear wax affects flying unless the ears are completely occluded (blocked up) so pressure equalisation between the outer and middle ears cannot take place.

If excess ear wax is not removed, it can lead to a build-up of impacted earwax. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms of impacted earwax, including ear pain, a ‘full ear’ or a cough, book an appointment with Carrigaline CarePlus Pharmacy at 021-4757083 or via online booking.
